Reducing is better than reusing or recycling

I have decided to switch to paperless bills from my bank. Instead of getting my bills in the post, I'll only get them in my email (at least HSBC offers this service). With this simple step, I'll be reducing paper use.
I thought about this after reading The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saving the Environment, a very interesting book that provides a basic overview on the environment, global warming and other threats and, more importantly, ideas on what we can all do to help. The author says something very obvious but that I have never thought about (sometimes, I'm a bit slow...) It's much better to reduce, than reuse or recycle something. If we reduce the amount of paper (or plastic, or whatever) that we use, then it won't be necessary to reuse it or recycle it.
Why is recycling more popular then? First, because it's easier for everyone to recycle something after using it than stop using it. Also, it would obvioulsy be a disaster for some companies if we all decided to stop using some of their products, rather than still buying and later recycle them.
Of course, for things that we need (or really want), reusing and recycling are the next best options!

Reducir es mejor que reusar o reciclar

He decidido que voy a pasar de facturas en papel y pedirle a mi banco que, a partir de ahora, me las envie solo por email (por lo menos HSBC, que es mi banco en Inglaterra, ofrece esta opcion). De esta manera tan simple, estare reduciendo mi consumo de papel.
Esto lo decidi despues de leer el libro The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saving the Environment. Es un libro muy interesante, que explica en terminos muy basicos todo sobre el medio ambiente, el calentamiento global y otras amenazas, y, lo mas importante, lo que se puede hacer para ayudar. Una de las cosas que lei y que me impacto por lo basico y porque nunca lo habia pensado (a veces soy cortita) es que explica que reducir la cantidad que usamos de algo es mucho mejor que reusarlo, que a su vez es mejor que reciclarlo. Si reducimos la cantidad de papel (o plastico, o lo que sea) que usamos, no hara falta reusarlo ni reciclarlo.
Por que, entonces, es reciclar, la opcion mas popular? Primero, porque es mas facil reciclar lo que hemos usado que dejar de comprar o usar algo. Ademas, obviamente, seria un desastre para muchas empresas que la gente dejara de usar algo, mientras que si se usa y recicla, las empresas todavia obtienen los beneficios de nuestra compra. Da que pensar...
Por supuesto, para aquellas cosas que necesitamos (o simplemente queremos mucho), reusar o reciclar no son malas opciones!

Voluntary work

Voluntary work in Ecuador is probably one of the most important things I've ever done to try to "save the world." I always wanted to do volunteer work. I know that many people believe that "with everything that needs to be done at home, why go so far to help" (an opinion that I do not share at all, but let´s talk about that another day). At home, I simply could never find time. But this year, whilst traveling around South America, I did have time and, so far I have worked with three NGOs. I worked sporadically in Buenos Aires with LIFE (http://lifeargentina.org), which helps children in poor neighborhoods of the city, and Leer (http://www.leer.org.ar), which promotes literacy in Argentina, and I have worked full time for two months at CENIT (http://www.cenitecuador.org), which helps working children in the markets in southern Quito.
Volunteering has definitely changed me. On the one hand is a very satisfying experience personally. In this type of organizations (usually not very organized), you need to use your initiative, and so I've learned a lot about organizing programs, planning classes, how to engage with the children ...
But working with children and closely watching their reality has been the biggest shock. Of course you realise before you start that they live in poverty, they have to work and so they don´t go to school, their parents or relatives do not pay attention to them, or worse, they mistreat or abuse them ... but you don’t realise what these things really mean until you see them closely and put names and faces to these problems.
In these two months, I feel that I have achieved many things and I have helped many people (or so I hope). I will work with another organization in Otavalo, also in Ecuador, for another two months, this time with adults ... so I´ll let you know how that goes! And when I return, I want to try to raise money for these organizations that help so many people.

Voluntariado

Probablemente, trabajar de voluntaria en Ecuador es una de las cosas más importantes que he hecho para intentar "salvar el mundo". Siempre había querido hacer voluntariado y sé que mucha gente opina que "con todo lo que hay que hacer en casa, por qué irse tan lejos a ayudar" (una opinión que no comparto en absoluto, pero ya hablaremos de eso otro día), pero yo, en casa, simplemente no encontraba tiempo y este año de viajes si algo tenía, era tiempo así que hasta ahora he colaborado con dos ONGs. Trabajé esporádicamente en Buenos Aires con la organización LIFE (http://lifeargentina.org), que ayuda a niños de barrios pobres de la ciudad, y he trabajado dos meses en CENIT (http://www.cenitecuador.org) que ayuda a niños trabajadores de los mercados del sur de Quito.
El voluntariado me ha cambiado, sí. Por un lado es una experiencia muy satisfactoria personalmente, en este tipo de organizaciones (normalmente no tan organizadas), hay que usar mucho la iniciativa, así que he aprendido mucho de organización de programas, planificación de clases, cómo tratar a los niños...
Pero trabajar con los niños y ver su realidad de cerca ha sido sin duda el shock más grande. Porque sí, sabes que viven en la pobreza, que tienen que trabajar y no van a la escuela, que sus padres o familiares no les prestan atención, o lo que es peor, les maltratan o abusan de ellos... pero hasta que no lo ves y les pones nombre y cara a estos problemas, no te das cuenta de lo que realmente significan.
En estos dos meses, siento que he conseguido muchas cosas y he ayudado a mucha gente (o eso espero). Voy a trabajar con otra organización diferente en Otavalo, también en Ecuador, durante otros dos meses, esta vez con adultos... así que ya os contare! Y cuando vuelva a España, quiero tratar de recaudar dinero para estas organizaciones que hacen un trabajo tan importante.

Lo que ya estamos haciendo

Muchos de nosotros ya estamos haciendo cosas (grandes o pequeñas) que hacen del mundo un lugar mejor. Apagar las luces cuando salimos de una habitacion, unas horas a la semana como voluntarios en una organizacion local, apadrinar a un niño en un pais mas pobre que el nuestro, ayudar al vecino... todas estas cosas significan mucho!
En este blog, voy a hablar de las cosas que yo hago, lo que mi novio hace, lo ue mis amigos y mi familia ya estan haciendo para ayudar a salvar el mundo!

The things we are already doing

Many of us are already doing things (big or small), to make the world a better place. Turning off the lights when leaving a room to help the environment, weekly voluntary work in a local charity, sponsoring a child in a poor country, helping the neighbour with their shopping... all these things matter!
In this blog, I´ll be talking about the things that I do, what my boyfriend does, what my family does, what my friends are doing to help save the world!
